What is Video Editing?
In simplest terms, video editing refers to the process of manipulating video images. This process encompasses everything from cutting segments, also known as trimming, to sequencing clips, transitions, and other special effects.
Video editing is the type of industry that is constantly evolving. Therefore, it is imperative that video editing companies remain current. The evolution of the industry has continued to the present day.Traditionally, video editing involved arranging and modifying images and sound in an ordered sequence. It made no difference if the images were captured by video camera, tapeless camcorder, or recorded in a television studio on a video tape recorder (VTR) the content had to be accessed sequentially.
This meant that in order to edit video, the negatives would have to be cut and physically moved. This tedium characterized video editing services until the advent of computer-based random access on non-linear editing systems (NLE).
Non-linear editing systems (NLE) are capable of performing non-destructive editing on source material. This meant that the destructive act of cutting film stock or video tape was eliminated. Non-linear editing (NLE) enables us to directly access any frame in a digital video clip. This has been a substantial improvement from traditional editing and has resulted in a rise in not only our production levels and capabilities, but of the entire industry as well.
Non-linear systems (NLE) and professional editing software have made video editing services very flexible. For Instance, post-production services used to involve two stages, offline and online editing. Offline video post-production was the process of copying and editing raw footage without affecting the original film stock or video tape. This was all in an effort to reduce the possibility of error in the editing process. Once the film stock or videotape was edited offline, the original film stock or videotape would be assembled to its exact specifications in the online post-production stage.
What We do Differently
However, at Reel Vision we use video editing software on an NLE system like Apple’s Final Cut Pro to expedite this process and remove the potential for human error. All of the original footage is digitized and inputted to our editing suite at high resolution, where our editors are free to work and develop the final cut.
It is true that the processes required for video editing services have become so accessible that people have begun to create and edit their own video projects. For this reason, it can be tempting to take a DIY approach, but it is no substitute for a professional video editing company. To reiterate, high quality video post-production is contingent on cutting edge technology and skilled technicians. Despite the large amount of video editing software and cameras in the market, it does not compare to the depth of skill and experience of our editors, or the quality and capabilities of our technology.
Our post-production services are conducted through Apple’s Final Cut Pro editing software. We have the capability to input motion graphics, transitions, cuts, voice overs and music. More importantly, we have the skill set and finesse necessary to make these features stand out in video post-production.
Our video editing company is able to achieve stunning and professional grade results with Apple’s Final Cut Pro editing software because our video editors are extremely well-versed with the interface and perform the full range of functions it has from basic to very advanced video editing features.
Over the years, a defining characteristic of our video editing services has become the exceptionally fast and fluid application of editing technique to both video and audio. As a professional video editing company, we have a deep understanding of industry practices and terminology. As such, we have simplified our processes of video post-production. This does not mean that our attention to detail or capabilities have diminished. Rather the organization of our work flow has empowered us to deliver a polished video product that is better than our competitors, and in a timetable that is faster than our competitors.
No post-production company would be complete without a host of video equipment, particularly cameras. As it happens, Reel Vision has cameras of varying ranges and capabilities that can service any project request. You may be thinking to yourself that camera quality is undoubtedly relevant to the processes of video production, but you are probably not considering the implications it has on post-production services.
The reality is that camera capabilities have tremendous impact on the quality of post-production services and the final cut of your video. In order to fully appreciate how important cameras are to video post-production it is imperative that you understand the principle of image resolution. Image resolution refers to the amount of detail an image holds. In simplest terms, a higher resolution means more image detail. How does this pertain to post-production services? Well, images shot at a high resolution render clearer and more detailed images. This provides an editor with more data to work with, and elevates the overall impact the editing process will have on your video.
In principle, high resolution cameras elevate the look of a video in every stage of production, but in practice it is slightly different. Our editing suites have the capability to edit in very high pixel ranges like 4k and 5k. However, the video standard for the world is 1080p, which puts us well ahead of the curve.
The market is slowly transitioning to a higher pixel format for videos with YouTube already hosting videos in 4k, but the majority remains at 1080p. So, the question becomes, is it still worth it to use high quality cameras? The answer is yes. Though most of the world uses a 1080p format for videos, this does not diminish the effect high resolution cameras have on video post-production or the final cut of your video. Even with compression there is a lot of picture quality to be gained by using high resolution cameras.
Still unconvinced? The current standard for video compression is capable of reducing images with resolutions up to and including 8k Ultra High Definition (UHD) without a reduction in video quality. Therefore, high end cameras must be a determining factor when choosing to hire a post-production company. Thankfully, at Reel Vision we have incredibly advanced Hollywood grade cameras like the Red Epic X. Choose Reel Vision as your post-production company, we lead the industry in skill, experience, and technology.

YouTube videos, and Vimeo!
A major part of video editing services is tasteful judgement. All too often people forget that the video must be watchable. Be wary of anyone or any company that places greater emphasis on flashy special effects and over-the-top scene transitions. If you were to watch any television show, commercial, or feature film, you would realize that the vast majority of them underwent extensive editing to make transitions less prominent and the inclusions of special effects more astute.
This is due to the fact that poorly implemented effects can be nauseating to watch and can diminish the quality and value of your video. At Reel Vision, we have a wealth of experience that informs our judgement and taste. These qualities are prevalent in every aspect of our work, but in video editing services they are of vital importance, and by a wide margin have the greatest impact how your video will turn out.
